Goods identification is based on bar codes. Bar codes (also barcodes) are graphic representations of information. The combination of dark and white elements (set according to specific rules) allows for automatic scanning of information with the use of electronic reader. There are about 250 types of bar codes; however, only several of them are commonly used (e.g. EAN 13, EAN 8, CODE 128, EAN 128). Bar codes are widely used, especially to identify trade units (supermarkets, warehouses), logistic units (courier and shipping services), to identify business resources (capital assets and inventories), location (information concerning facilities with their shipping and target addresses) and services (identification of clients and recipients). Along with introduction of bar code technology, effectiveness and work comfort increase (faster implementation of tasks, optimization of data entry, elimination of human errors) and thanks to it, the company may count on rationalisation and precision of the operations being performed.
